About Bucu Farms & Detroit Eastern Market

One of the longstanding pork producers at the market is Bucu Farms of Avoca. “My grandfather came from Yugoslavia in the early 1970s. He experienced a lot of oppression and came here with nothing, but he was a professional butcher by trade,” says Dan Bucu.
“My father, Konstantin, worked for a meat packing company in Sterling Heights until he decided to purchase some land and raise his own hogs and bring them to the market.” “Back in the 70s and 80s, there were 35 other pork farmers and meat producers at the market. We would all bring our fresh meat from Thanksgiving until Easter. There was no refrigeration, back in those days,” he recalls.

In recent years, as health regulations changed, many of the pork farmers fell away from the market, says Dan. “Now there are just two of us, and we’re the only one that attends year round. We cater a lot to the ethnic communities who are looking to make their own traditional European recipes. My Dad was always known for that.” “I started going in ‘83 when I was 10 years old. My father couldn’t speak the language, so he relied on my sister and I. Three years ago, I decided to come back to the farm to work with my father full time. I wanted to get back to my roots. My Dad is ecstatic. It’s fantastic to work together- it’s a priceless position to be in. When you’re young,  you don’t realize how cool that is. I really enjoy the market. I’ve done this all my life. So many things have changed over the years, but everyone is having a great experience down here.”
